Imagine no longer having access to digital technology.
Things like work, studies, and keeping in touch with friends would become almost impossible.
This is the reality for 6 million people in the UK who lack digital devices or the skills needed to use them. While technology is evolving rapidly, parts of society are being left behind, and some are losing out on opportunities most of us take for granted.
So, what can you do to help?
While you can’t single-handedly end the digital divide, you can join the movement to educate and inspire others.
Many people aren’t aware of what the digital world has to offer, and as a successful digital apprentice, you could share your knowledge and experience to help others discover exciting opportunities.
We’re inviting you to make a pledge that will contribute to ending digital poverty by 2030.
As part of BCS’s Force for Good programme, you’ll pioneer ways to solve digital exclusion in your community and beyond. Together, we can make the digital world more inclusive by encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to pursue pathways like digital apprenticeships.
It’s up to you how you do this, but here are some ideas:
-
Talk to local school students: You could inspire the next generation of digital apprentices by speaking to students considering their post-16 choices. Some students may not yet be aware of digital apprenticeships, and your visit could open up brand new career options.
-
Visit a community group or charity: All sorts of local groups might benefit from learning about digital opportunities. Digital exclusion is especially common among older people, as well as among those facing poverty. Unfortunately, the lower someone’s income, the less likely they are to have access to the online world, which then makes it harder to find work, gain new skills, manage finances, and far more.
- Mentor a new apprentice: The transition from education to employment can be daunting, so why not help someone settle into their apprenticeship? You could provide professional expertise, or simply offer encouragement and useful tips.
