Bristol and Bath branch initiative: transforming branches post-COVID and making IT good for society

In the ever-evolving landscape of the post-COVID world, BCS’ Bristol and Bath branch is leading the charge in reshaping its branch to meet the demands of a remote and hybrid work environment in the local region. At the heart of this initiative lies a twofold mission: transformation of the branch and a renewed focus on Making IT Good for Society. This mission is fuelled by the inception of a movement that aims to redefine the role of their branch in supporting local communities and fostering a sense of social responsibility among its members.

Dave Donaghy (Chair) has outlined three strategic aims to guide the branch towards a more impactful and socially responsible future:

  1. Supporting Charities and Voluntary Organizations Locally

The first aim of the initiative is a call to action for BCS’ Bristol and Bath members to actively engage with and support local charities and voluntary organizations. The emphasis here is not on financial contributions but on active involvement, endorsing a sense of community and shared responsibility.

A significant development in this area is the introduction of the Volunteer Coordination Officer (VCO) role. This role, pioneered by the branch, has gained traction within member groups. The focus on skills-based volunteering offers a structured approach with distinct tracks, ensuring a meaningful impact on both the volunteers and the recipients. The VCO role aims not only to centralize and streamline volunteer efforts but also serves as a testament to a commitment to practical and impactful social contributions.

The branch has also forged strategic connections across public, private, and third sectors. By partnering with organizations such as BANES 3SG, a charity built upon the foundation of supporting voluntary and community action, the Bristol and Bath branch aims to create a robust support system for charitable initiatives, ensuring a sustained and meaningful impact.

  1. Extending Support to Educational Beneficiaries

The second aim extends the spirit of giving to educational beneficiaries. The branch recognizes the importance of education and aims to make a positive impact on the lives of students and educational institutions within the region. This commitment to education aligns with the broader goal of fostering a technologically literate society, paving the way for future innovations and advancements, thus contributing to making IT good for society

  1. Providing Value to Early Career Branch Members

In a deliberate move, the Bristol and Bath branch is focusing on providing value to early career branch members. This targeted approach acknowledges the unique needs and challenges faced by individuals at the beginning of their careers. By offering support, mentorship, and resources tailored to this demographic, the branch aims to cultivate a generation of IT professionals committed to the values of social responsibility.

In-short, the initiative is not just about adapting to a post-COVID world but about leading the charge in redefining the role of IT professionals in society. By focusing on the twin pillars of branch transformation and Making IT Good for Society, the branch is charting a course for a more socially responsible and community-oriented future, demonstrating that the potential for positive change and meaningful impact is limitless. The initiative serves as a beacon, guiding and inspiring IT professionals to not only adapt to change but actively contribute to shaping a better, more inclusive future.
